10 Famous Hollywood Flicks That Were Shot at Well-Known Indian Locations

Bollywood filmmakers run around the globe looking for exotic locales to shoot their films, does that mean India’s very own scenic beauty leaves filmmakers unimpressed?

While watching a Hollywood film, we usually do not expect to see our country in the background. But nothing beats the thrill of spotting India in a Hollywood movie. There have been many instances when a Hollywood movie was partially/wholly shot in India.

Below are 10 Hollywood films that feature famous Indian destinations:

1- The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button- Varanasi

The 2008 movie told the story of Benjamin Button’s case of reverse-aging, whereby he shrinks in size as he grows older. Some of its scenes were shot in Varanasi.

2- The Dark Knight Rises- Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Christopher Nolan’s 2012-action thriller was also shot in India. While the prison in which Bruce Wayne is held captive was built in the UK, the escape scene is shot at the popular Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.

3- Zero Dark Thirty- Chandigarh

Although the movie is about hunting down Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan – the crew did not get permission to shoot there. So Kathryn Bigelow got her crew to Chandigarh. The shooting locations in Chandigarh were the Punjab Engineering College premises as well as the DAV College canteen.

4- The Bourne Supremacy- Goa

The Bourne Supremacy was shot in a number of locations, one of them being the picturesque beach state of India, Goa. The isolated Palolem Beach in South Goa was the hideout of Jason Bourne, while many places in North Goa also featured in the movie.

5- Mission Impossible 4- Bora Bazaar, Mumbai/ Bengaluru

Mission Impossible 4 was also shot in India – to be specific, the explosive climax of the movie was shot in the by-lanes of Bora Bazaar, Mumbai. Besides that, a couple of scenes were also shot in the Sun TV office, Bengaluru.

6- Octopussy- Udaipur

The 1983 James Bond movie too had a couple of scenes shot in India. Roger Moore, playing Bond, was shown infiltrating a palace. This palace is located in Udaipur.

7- A Mighty Heart- Pune and Mumbai

Remember Daniel Pearl – the Wall Street Journal journalist who was kidnapped and killed by Al Qaida? His widow, Martane Pearl, wrote a book about it which was adapted into a movie, with Angelina Jolie playing her. Although the depicted location in the movie is Karachi, Pakistan, once again the crew did not get permission to shoot there and had to make do with Pune and Mumbai.

8- Eat, Pray, Love- Delhi, Haryana

In the movie, the protagonist goes to Italy, India and Indonesia to eat, pray and love – as the name suggests. So Julia Roberts, who played the lead, is shown searching for spirituality in India. The crew shot the scenes at the Ashram Hari Mandir in Pataudi, Haryana.

9- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- Jaipur and Udaipur

The movie is about British retirees who come to India for vacation, where they stay at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Starring Judie Dench, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel – most parts of the movie was shot in Jaipur and Udaipur.

10- The Darjeeling Limited- Udaipur, Jodhpur

The movie is about three brothers meeting together in India where they come to fulfill their spiritual needs. Starring Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman – the movie was extensively shot in Udaipur, the airport there and also Jodhpur.
