Bollywood has often made spine-chilling horror classics that have been downright frightening according to the Indian cinema.
New horror movies are cool again. No longer do you have to hide the fact that you’re enthusiastic about surrounding yourself with fellow scare fans and enjoying being scared out of your wits. And the even better news is that, whether you’re heading to the cinema or just settling down to one of your many favourite streaming services, there are some genuinely brilliant new horror movies on the way in 2020.
To help us prepare, we whipped up this handy guide to the 10 horror titles we’re most excited for this year. There’s good stuff from the beginning of the year until the very end, so get prepared to get scared!
1- Bhoot: Part 1
Dharma is known for its larger than life films but with Bhoot, they’re stepping into the territory of horror. Starring Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Ashutosh Rana, the film is a first of a planned horror film franchise. The movie is gaining prominence for the fact that Vicky Kaushal who is actually scared of horror movies will ironically be playing a role in the horror film.
2- Roohi Afzana
After tasting success in the genre of horror-comedy, Rajkummar Rao has now teamed up with Janhvi Kapoor for Roohi Afzana. The film revolves around a spirit of a man who abducts brides on their honeymoons. The movie also features Varun Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa.
3- Laxxmi Bomb
Laxmmi Bomb is a remake of the film Kanchana which is a horror-comedy. The film is a tale of revenge by a couple of ghosts as they haunt an innocent man to get justice for their murders.
4- Bhool Bhulaiyya 2
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is the sequel to the 2007 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa directed by Priyadarshan. Along with a change in the director, the film also gets a fresh cast in Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani but the theme remains the same.
5- Stree 2
Stree 2 is a sequel to Stree, which stars Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Roa in lead roles. Taking the storyline forward, it will be interesting to see a sequel of this.
6- Ghost Stories
Ghost Stories stars Dhadak actor Janhvi Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, Gulshan Devaiah, Avinash Tewari, Surekha Sikri, Pavail Gulati, Sukant Goel, Vijay Verma and YouTube fame Kusha Kapila, in pivotal roles. This movie is an anthology horror film and comprises of four short stories. It is co-produced under the banners of RSVP Movies and Flying Unicorn Entertainment.
Nishabdham is an upcoming Hollywood crossover thriller film directed by Hemant Madhukar. The film starring Anushka Shetty as lead role alongside Madhavan, Anjali, Michael Madsen, Subbaraju, Shalini Pandey and Srinivas Avasarala in supporting roles.
Rumy Jafry”s Chehre is a thriller where a group of friends, some of them retired lawyers, meet at a bungalow in Shimla to play a psychological game. Amitabh Bachchan will be seen playing a lawyer and Emraan Hashmi is playing a business tycoon in the thriller. The movie also features Rhea Chakraborty, Siddhanth Kapoor, Krystle Dsouza, Raghubir Yadav and Annu Kapoor.
Anushka Sharma who has produced some interesting films like NH10 and Pari, is all set to explore with web series, Bulbul that will be produced under her banner. The series will feature Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri of Laila Majnu fame as the leads. Bulbul will be a period drama set in a vibrant atmosphere amidst age-old beliefs and superstitions. It will tell the story of Satya and his brother’s child bride who gets separated after Satya is sent to school in England. After he returns, he finds out that Bulbul has been abandoned by his brother and has been serving the people of the village.
10- Kaali Khuhi
Directed by Terrie Samudra produced by Manomay motion pictures with the history of female infanticide and mysterious deaths of its residents, this Punjab village must be saved and it is up to 10-year-old Shivangi to be its savior.
