13 Characters in Bollywood Movies Showed Us the Real Pain of Getting ‘Friendzoned’

Being madly in love with someone who doesn’t feel the same way about you can be quite painful. And if that person happens to be your friend, then that love is just plain torture because you are officially in the “friend-zone”.

The friend-zone can be described as the middle ground between great friendship and unrequited love. Anyone who has been in this agonizing state knows not only heart break but also the patience with which you have to wait in the hope of your friendship turning into love.

Since misery loves company, luckily you aren’t alone when it comes to being friend-zoned. Here are a few movie characters who were friend zoned.

Kajol, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai started the trend of friendzone in Bollywood. Anjali (Kajol) loves her best friend, and she chooses to declare her feeling to him on the same day when Rahul (SRK) too wants to declare his love, which is not for her sadly! She left her college midway. See, what being friendzone can make people do. She had a bright career ahead of her, at least in basket ball. But her fate led her to become an incompetent summer camp nanny. After going through the longest phase of ‘friendzone’, she is perhaps one of those lucky few who gets to marry her crush eventually, 10-15 saal baad!

The movie is a treat for the forever friend-zoned guys and girls out there, your silver lining for the fact that someday Cupid might just strike.

Karisma Kapoor, Dil Toh Pagal Hai

She dances like a dream, looks gorgeous, but is not the girl he dreams of. Shah Rukh friendzoned Karisma and instead romanced Madhuri Dixit. This grown-up take on love saw Karisma accepting the fact and playing a supportive friend. Film’s dialogue “Kisi ko pyaar karna aur usi se pyaara paana, bahot kam logon ko naseeb hota hai” became popular in no time because people could very well empathise.

Shah Rukh Khan, Yes Boss

Who could ever believe that SRK could get friendzoned? I mean he is ‘the’ love-god of Bollywood. Unfortunately no one can escape the friendzone. Not even god. He was friendzoned by Juhi Chawla in Yes Boss. Juhi chose Aditya Pancholi over him. Also he was friendzoned in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Om Shanti Om.

John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, Dostana

Two guys – Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham – pretend to be gay to get cheap accommodation. The problem, however, is the hot houseowner, who they fall for. After many twists and turns, she gets to know that these men are straight, but she doesn’t pick either of them. Bobby Deol walks away with PC at the end in this caper.

Saif Ali Khan, Kal Ho Na Ho

Saif never had it easy when it comes to finding love in films. Kal Ho Na Ho becomes another “I love her but she likes me as a friend” story for Saif! It has one happy ending for him but it was evident that SRK’s death was the only reason he ended up with Naina (Priety Zinta).

Ayesha Jhulka, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar

Ayesha is head over heels in love with Aamir and he friendzoned her for Pooja. She even dedicates a wonderful song to him, and he shares the same song for someone else. THAT is the worst. Sharing one song for different people. How cruel.

Ranbir Kapoor, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani

Prem starts to progress and develop as a person for Jenny and just when he is about to propose her, the girl tells him about her boyfriend and her eloping plan. Prem is heartbroken has he walks slowly in the friendzone. Tbh, he should have asked her more about her life before falling for her.

Kalki Koechelin, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) is yet another shining example of a female handling friendzone like a savage. She is the tomboy who falls in love with her buddy. Everyone around the two, knows that she loves him, but he never realises it. It does sound a bit like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but her girlie avatar doesn’t change the equation. This girl knows how to move on without holding any grudges. Dudes, all over need to take a lesson.

Rani Mukherjee, Mujhse Dosti Karoge

It was during childhood that Pooja fell in love with Raj, while Raj never had any interest for anyone but Tina. Before Pooja could even confess her love for Raj, he friendzones her. But with time, as the two meet and come close, a lot of truths unravel and Raj finally falls for Pooja!

Genelia D’Souza, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Genelia had to go through a phase of being friendzoned by her own best friend, played by Imran Khan because both of them were too late to realize their love for each other!

Siddharth Malhotra, Student Of The Year

Rohan (Varun) and Shanaya (Alia) are already dating each other when Abhimanyu (Siddharth) makes his entry in the college. As expected, he falls for his friend, Rohan’s girlfriend Shanaya. The poor guy happy goes into the friendzone.

Neil Nitin Mukesh, New York

“Human Behaviour Ke Baare Mein Humne Bhi Aaj Kuch Jaana… Jab Dost Se Ladki Na Pate, Toh Dukh Hota Hai, Lekin Dost Se Apni Waali Pat Jaaye Toh Zyada Dukh Hota Hai”. This is what suits dear Neil Nitin Mukesh the best, as his friend Katrina Kaif decided to get away with John Abraham. Going all the way to another country in another continent and getting friendzoned. Best.

Deepika Padukone, Cocktail

Veronica was the least stereotypical character Bollywood has ever produced and how does she get rewarded? With tears and whole lotta heartbreak! The poor girl gets her heart broken because Saif Ali Khan fell for the girl next door, for which he had to transform his playboy ways completely. The sadder part is that Veronica still has to remain best friends with the dude and his new girl! Life sucks for her, I tell you. Next time you feel self-pity, think about Veronica and feel good.

Word of advice: before falling in love, saavdhaan rahe, satark rahe. Dhanyawad.
