27 Upcoming Bollywood Movies That We Hope Will Make 2020 The Year Of Hindi Cinema

The past decade has witnessed multiple firsts in the history of Bollywood, as content-driven cinema started finding mainstream acceptance. The good news continues, as big-ticket directors and blue-chip actors come together to usher in an exciting decade in cinematic history. Here are the names and dates you’ll want to bookmark on your 2020 calendar.

1- Chhapaak (releasing January 10, 2020)

After a brief hiatus post the release of Padmaavat (2018), Deepika Padukonereturns to the big screen for the real-life story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

2- Jawaani Jaaneman(releasing February 7, 2020)

A romantic comedy drama, Jawaani Jaaneman is a coming-of-age film that will see debutant Alaya F playing Saif Ali Khan’s daughter. According to reports, Saif Ali Khan will be playing an ‘accidental dad’ in the upcoming feature and will also see Khan reunite with Tabu on screen after a long time (though we don’t know if their characters are paired romantically yet).

3- Tanhaji: An Unsung Warrior (releasing January 10, 2020)

Coming together on the silver screen after a long hiatus, Kajol and Ajay Devgn will be next seen in this Om Raut-directorial. The film is a historical drama based on the life of the military leader in Chhatrapati Shivaji’s army, Subedar Tanhaji Malusare, and the way he went to fight the Mughal commander Uday Bhan (portrayed by Saif Ali Khan). 

4- Aaj Kal (releasing February 14, 2020)

Following a quiet year in 2019, Sara Ali Khan will return to the box office with two releases, which include a sequel to Imitiaz Ali’s 2009 release, Love Aaj Kal. Slated to release on Valentine’s Day 2020, the lead pairing of the romantic comedy has already garnered interest, especially with rumours of Khan and Kartik Aaryan dating in real life as well.

5- Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan (releasing February 21, 2020)

After taking on the taboo topic of erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Savdhaan (2016), Ayushmann Khurrana will continue his onscreen activism with a spin-off that brings homosexuality to the mainstream spotlight.

6- The True Story of Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl (releasing March 13, 2020)

Janhvi Kapoor will be next seen in The True Story of Gunjan Saxena, which, as the title suggests, is based on the story of India’s first Air Force woman officer who went to war.

7- Angrezi Medium (releasing March 20, 2020)

The season of spin-offs continues with Kareena Kapoor Khan taking on the role of a cop for the first time in her onscreen career. The Homi Adajania-directed film will see Irrfan Khan returning from the original cast of Hindi Medium (2017) for his first project after being diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour.

8- Street Dancer 3D (releasing January 24, 2020)

It is a sequel to ABCD 2. Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor will share the screen together in this movie.

9- Panga (releasing January 24, 2020)

Kangana Ranaut starrer Panga tells the story of a former Kabaddi player who determines to make a comeback to the sport after marriage and child.

10- Rooh Afza (releasing March 20, 2020)

Janhvi Kapoor will also team up with Rajkummar Rao for the first time in 2020. The horror-comedy movie will see Kapoor playing a double role. 

11- ’83 (releasing April 10, 2020)

2020 will see Padukone working with husband Ranveer Singh for the first time since their marriage in 2018. Having delivered many successful outings together in the past, the duo is gearing up for the onscreen retelling of India’s historic win of the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Based on the life of veteran cricketer Kapil Dev, the first look of the movie sees Singh in the sport star’s signature moustache and curly hairdo.

12- Bhoot: Part One – The Haunted Ship (releasing February 21, 2020)

The horror-thriller movie stars Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar. They will be seen together for the first time.

13- Baaghi 3 (releasing March 6, 2020)

Tiger Shroff will return in his action avatar in the upcoming movie Baaghi 3. Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh will also be seen in the movie.

14- Sooryavanshi (releasing March 27, 2020)

The much-awaited cop movie of 2020 will be Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi featuring Akshay Kumar in the lead role. Sooryavanshi will also mark the comeback of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif’s on-screen pair. 

15- Gulabo Sitabo (releasing April 17, 2020)

Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan following charges in this strange family comedy-drama. It is from the accomplished director Shoojit Sircar. Gulabo Sitabo inevitably sets a high promise for Khurana as he cooperates with Amitabh and his chief from Vicky Donor.

16- Coolie No. 1 (releasing May 1, 2020)

Govinda’s iconic movie Coolie No. 1will be revisited on the big screen with a fresh star cast. Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan will take on the roles of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor respectively.

17- Khaali Peeli (releasing June 20, 2020)

Coming together for the first time, Khaali Peeli will see Ishaan Khattar and Ananya Panday in leading roles. A typical boy-meets-girl story, the movie is about how the two navigate a rollercoaster night in Mumbai in a black and yellow taxi.

18- Sadak 2 (releasing July 10, 2020)

Alia Bhatt will now be turning her focus to the sequel of the 1991 release, Sadak. The story revolves around corrupt fake godmen and the cast will feature Sanjay Dutt, Pooja Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur.

19- Shamshera (releasing July 31, 2020)

Set in the 1800s, Shamshera is about a dacoit tribe who takes charge in the fight for their rights and independence against the British. The action-adventure movie stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor.

20- Jersey (releasing August 28, 2020)

Jersey, the sports drama film is a remake of a Telugu film by the same name. The upcoming movie will see Shahid Kapoor in the lead, who will play the role of a cricketer, showcasing his struggles and failures as he works up to make it to the Indian Cricket Team.

21- Toofan (releasing October 2, 2020)

Adding to the already-robust lineup, Toofan is a sports-based drama reuniting Farhan Akhtar with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag director, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The film tells the story of a boxer, played by Akhtar.

22- Laal Singh Chadda (releasing December 25, 2020)

Laal Singh Chaddha is the Bollywood remake of Tom Hank’s 1994 Hollywood film, Forrest Gump. The movie will see Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan come back together on the silver screen after 3 Idiots (2009).

23- Dostana 2 (release date yet to be announced)

Over a decade after Karan Johar explored the topic of homosexuality on the big screen, Dostana has been green-lit for a sequel that will feature Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor and Lakshya Lalwani in lead roles. 

24- Brahmāstra (tentative release date May 2020)

The first instalment of the mythological trilogy will witness the onscreen union of real-life couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Shah Rukh Khan, who is dropping in for a special appearance. The movie follows the quest of the eponymous ‘Brahmastra’, a purported weapon of God, pieces of which are hidden in different parts of the country.

25- Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (releasing July 31, 2020)

A sequel to ‘Bhool Bhulaiya’, which will star Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani.

26- Jayeshbhai Joredaar (release date yet to be announced)

Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Joredarwill talk about how society can be judgemental about women. The upcoming feature will see the actor reunite with YRF’s Maneesh Sharma.

27- Takht (release date yet to be announced)

Takht will be Karan Johar’s first time directing a period drama. The film has a multi-starrer cast including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Anil Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Vicky Kaushal. From what we know, the upcoming film is based in the Mughal era and will tell the story of the two warring brothers, Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh, as they fight for the throne.
