After winning the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa, MS Dhoni was given the leadership role in ODIs in the same year. India played a tri-series in Australia in February 2008, also involving Sri Lanka and Dhoni didn’t flatter to deceive by any means. In the finals versus the hosts, Dhoni’s men turned up with thumping wins in Sydney and Brisbane, and hence won the series. In fact, in the first final at the SCG, Dhoni himself went on to hit the winning runs. However, after the victory, Dhoni got himself tangled in controversy.

It was also Dhoni’s maiden overseas ODI series as the national captain. The then-youngster allegedly sacrificed a goat at a Ranchi temple to celebrate the triumph. The act angered the whole nation and Dhoni made sure to never repeat such antics.

2. Dhoni’s illegal gloves

In the same tri-nation series, Dhoni had the face the wrath of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well. The incident happened during India’s league match against Ricky Ponting’s Australia in Sydney. The apex cricket board found out that the keeping gloves used by Dhoni was illegal.

The cricket body also warned the Indian captain of a penalty if he used them again without inspection. As far as the encounter was concerned, India lost by 18 runs after failing to chase down 318. Ponting’s 124 set up the mammoth total for the home team.

Gautam Gambhir stood up with a 113 in the run-chase, but couldn’t help the visiting team evade defeat. From a personal front, he had a tough time, especially with the bat as he could only manage 36 off 66 with a strike-rate of 54.54.

3. Dhoni’s CSK match-fixing saga

SP Kumar, the investigator of the match-fixing saga, found in his investigation that a bookie, named Kitty, had confessed that Gurunath Meiyappan had informed him that Dhoni had agreed to (score 140 and) lose a match.

The SP said in his report that Gurunath had allegedly ‘confirmed’ the cricketer’s involvement. Thereafter, Kumar was transferred from Internal Security to Railways post his interrogation with Kitty. The matter grabbed headlines back then, but it wasn’t followed up. Subsequently, Meiyappan was the team principle of the CSK, was subsequently banned for life by the BCCI for his role in betting.

4. The Dhoni-Srinivasan partnership

There was a time when Dhoni was the skipper of CSK and also an employee of the India Cements. The conflict of interest occurred as the IPL franchise was owned by India Cements itself and N Srinivasan, the former ICC Chairman and BCCI president, was the active Managing Director of the Company.

Once Srinivasan vetoed his recommendation and helped Dhoni retain his India captaincy. Dhoni has also highly spoken about Srinivasan, saying that he has always helped other cricketers. However, some of the BCCI officials reckoned that the keeper was shrewd and knew how to manoeuvre his way through the BCCI’s corridors of power when required.
