Television actors leaving their career and taking up movies is not unheard of. There have been several TV stars who’ve bid their television careers goodbye to pursue their Bollywood dreams. At the other end of the spectrum, we also have Bollywood stars taking up television projects.
While television and Bollywood careers often merge, what is slightly unheard of is when a TV stars turns down a Bollywood film. In India, Bollywood has always been considered a step-up from television. We don’t necessarily agree with this popular notion; its 2020 and television has almost as huge a reach as Bollywood, and it looks like there are several TV stars who agree with us.
Here is a list of all the telly stars who’ve turned down Bollywood movies because, hey, why not?
After her successful stint with Naagin she got movie offers which she ultimately rejected. She was quoted as saying, “I have been getting quite a lot of film offers, but I was not prepared to enter such a big industry. Whenever I will be prepared, I will definitely do it.”
‘Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi’ star Shaheer Sheikh who has made a name for himself on TV in India and Indonesia believes that he would not trade his TV stardom for a small role in films. In an interview he was quoted saying, “I have been offered films as well but it’s better to do good television shows rather than a small role in a film.”
Last seen in Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil, Drashti was offered the lead role in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Returns, but she refused to take it up thanks to the popularity of her then hit show, Madhubala. When she was asked about making the shift to B-Town she denied it. “I have no time for anything else. I don’t even get to take a day off.”
Jay who is known for his boy-next-door look has done popular shows like ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ and ‘Sanskaar – Dharohar Apnon Ki’ also got offers of 2-3 films. Out of which, there was an offer of Yash Raj Films in 2010, but Jai refused the offer, as he wants to keep his focus on TV right now.
He was quoted by TOI saying “I wasn’t too happy with what I was being offered. I don’t have a problem doing a cameo as long as my scenes are mine and I’m not expected to share the screen space with other actors.” He rejected the offer to focus on his TV show.
Karan has been rumoured to be making a Bollywood debut for years. The latest rumour was that he was offered the role of an antagonist in Student of the Year 2 but he refused the role. When asked to comment he simply stated, “[Acting in] films is definitely what I am looking at doing next. But I can’t talk about the film right now.”
