Off late, sports personalities have become a huge source of inspiration, especially for filmmakers, who love to churn out content, based on their lives. We’re definitely not complaining, because it defines the very fabric and infrastructure that sports has developed in this country through the years. So, if the filmmakers are relaying a sportsperson’s story, through their films, it should be a matter of pride for us! A lot of biopics have been made and have been critically acclaimed over the years. We’ve obviously seen the Shah Rukh Khan Starrer ‘Chak De India’, which was based on a true story, inspired by the life of Mir Ranjan Negi, the then coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey team. Then we had Farhaan Akhtar’s ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which was based on the legend Milkha Singh, himself. Other sports biopics have also paved their way through the current stream of Indian cinema and have done fairly well over the years and the audience awaits many more to come out, revealing a lot more about our heroes from the past and the present.
1. Abhinav Bindra
The ace Indian shooter who won a gold medal in the Olympics has his very own biopic coming out and Kapoor jr., i.e. Harshvardhan Kapoor will be portraying his role, defining his journey through the Olympics. The shoot has already started for the film and Harshvardhan is getting into full form to play Abhinav. The film is also based around Abhinav’s own book titled ‘A Shot At History: My Obsessive Journey To Olympic Gold’.
2. Saina Nehwal
One of the best Badminton players in the country, Saina will have her own biopic soon which will be directed by Amol Gupte. The movie will feature Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role and, of course, trace Saina’s journey through her victory over many national and international titles, including the 2012 London Olympics, where she won a bronze medal. Right now Shraddha is prepping for the role and getting into practice mode, to play the Badminton star. Let’s see if Shraddha can do justice to this role!
3. Kapil Dev
Kapil Dev’s biopic ’83’ release date is extended till April 2019. Guessing by the number, you’d figure the movie is about the year 1983 and one of the most remarkable things to happen that year, was India winning the Cricket World Cup, led by the captaincy of Kapil Dev. The Kabir Khan biopic is based on Kapil Dev’s life and how he led India to victory in 1983. And guess what, Ranveer Singh plays him!
4. Mithali Raj
Viacom 18 Motion Pictures is soon releasing a biopic on India’s favourite female cricketer and we’re anticipating this one with bated breath! We’re not sure who is playing her yet, but we do hope it’s someone who can do absolute justice to the role! Mithali hopes that more young girls and women are inspired through this movie and take up sports as a career in India.
5. Dhyan Chand
Pooja Shetty’s production house recently approached Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok for permission to make a biopic on his father and he, of course, had no issues with that but requested them to keep the film as authentic as possible. Rumours have it, that Varun Dhawan may play the legend.
6. P.V. Sindhu
Sonu Sood is gearing up to produce this epic biopic on ace badminton player P.V. Sindhu and he believes it’s challenging to produce a biopic on a 22-year-old! Umm, okay Mr. Sood, maybe focus on her badminton skills then? The movie will focus on Sindhu and her struggle to achieve her dream. The movie is also rumoured to star Deepika Padukone taking Sindhu’s role head on! We can’t wait for this one!
