7 Royal Families In India Who are Still Living King Size Life in This Modern World

Talk about the mixture of culture , religions , heritage and knowledge , India is a reflection of all . Many great royal families are born here . From Maharajas to their descendants ,there are royal families who live a life king size even today.

Today, let’s see some of the royal families of India:

1. The Mewar Dynasty

One of the richest Indian Royal family of Mewar Dynasty is of Arvind Singh Mewar . They are the descendants of Royal Maharana Pratap and now resides in Udaipur. His Royal Highness Arvind Singh Mewar is the head of the family. He is the 76th custodian of the House of Mewar. Besides being a nominal king, Arvind Singh is a very successful businessman. He is the head of the HRH Group of Hotels, which has over 10 hotels under it. He and wife Maharani Vijayaraj live in the Udaipur city palace, a portion of which is also open for tourists to see and explore. He has also given out some palaces that still belong to the royal family on lease, notably the Lake Palace as well as the Fateh Prakash Palace, among others, to the Taj Group of Hotels to manage. He is one of the renowned name in tourism and travel industry. He has also opened a museum of antique cars in the city and manages his father’s crystal collection. They’re among the wealthiest royal families in India.

2. The Wadiyar Dynasty

The Wadiyar Dynasty traces their history back to the Yaduvanshi clan of Lord Krishna. Their throne still sits at the beautiful Mysore palace. Currently, the head of the dynasty is 27-year-old Yaduveer Krishnadutta Chamaraj Wadiyar. However, he was not the direct heir. His uncle, Srikantadatta Wadiyar, died childless in 2013 and didn’t name a successor. And hence, his wife, the Rajmata adopted Yaduveer as their son and turned him into king. With Mysore as the top silk producer in the company, the family’s brand, Royal Silk of Mysore started by Srikantadatta has remained a major success. The new king, however, holds a degree in English Literature and economics. He tied the knot to the Princess of Dungarpur, Trishika Kumari Singh, in 2016. The couple are now parents to a two-year-old son. 

3. The Royal Family of Jaipur

Rajasthan is a vibrant state with a touch of royalty. His Highness Bhawani Singh was the last titular head of Jaipur. However, due to not having any sons, in his old age, Bhawani Singh adopted his daughter, Diya Kumari’s son, Padmanabh Singh. In 2011, the young prince Padmanabh became the Maharaja of Jaipur. He is a national-level polo player and appears on the magazines . He is working to bring more awareness to the sport today. Not only has the royal family given out the Rambagh Palace to Taj Hotels to run, the young king himself partnered with AirBnB . He loves to travel . Under this new venture, he put up a suite in the Jaipur city palace on the travel website where tourists can come, stay and get a taste of the royal life. All the proceeds from this would go to the Princess Diya Kumari foundation. According to Times of India , the net worth of this family is over $2.8 billion.

4. The Rathores of Jodhpur

Rathod family once used to rule Jodhpur city. Their descendants still live here. It is home to the Mehrangarh Fort as well as the Umaid Bhawan Palace, which are both among the biggest forts and the largest private residences in the world. Currently, Maharaja Gaj Singh lives in the Umaid Bhawan Palace, with his wife, two kids and their spouses. A part of the Palace is open to tourists and the rest is managed by the Taj Group of Hotels, who run the place in partnership with the family. It’s among the most sought-after locations for destination weddings in the country. In fact, Priyanka Chopra tied the knot to Nick Jonas in this beautiful property itself. Maharaja Gaj Singh has not only served a term as a member of the Rajya Sabha, but he also served as Indian High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago a few years back.

5. The Gaekwads of Baroda

In the 18th Century , The Gaekwads, who originally came from Pune, ruled Vadodara , which was Baroda at that time. 52-year-old Samarjitsinh Gaekwad is the head of the royal family of Baroda. When he ascended the throne, he also inherited property worth over Rs 20,000 crores. Among all the royal families of India, the Gaekwads of Baroda own the Laxmi Vilas Palace, which is the largest private residence in the world. If that wasn’t enough, Samarjitsinh also inherited several paintings by Raja Ravi Varma as well as innumerable assets like gold and silver jewellery. He also manages temple trusts of 17 temples in Gujarat and Banaras. On top of that, he also constructed a personal 10 hole golf course in the palace. Samarjitsinh is a top-notch cricketer, who represented his state in the Ranji Trophy. He tried to dabble in politics, but has remained inactive since 2017.

6. The House of Bhonsales

However, what not a lot of people know is the great Swarajya King’s royal families have now been scattered across various districts in the state like Kolhapur, Satara, Nagpur, Mudhol, Savantwadi and Tanjore. Among these districts are scattered a few important heads of the family. Udayanraje of Satara is said to be the 13th Chhatrapati title holder. He is a recognised politician and is currently a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). Recently, he had declared assets worth Rs 170 crore, which included five cars and various jewellery. As opposed to him, we also have Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, who comes from Kolhapur, and also claims to be the 13th descendant of Shivaji Maharaj. He is currently an MP of the Rajya Sabha and is also a member of the BJP.

Last but not the least in the list is The Nawabs of Pataudi . The head of the Pataudi’s and Saif’s father was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi . He was the former cricketer and got married to actor Sharmila Tagore. They had 3 children , who are renowned personalities of Bollywood and fashion industry. Saif Also serves as the Nawab of Pataudi and owns Pataudi Palace. Saif .The actor is currently married to Kareena Kapoor Khan, with whom he is about to have his second child after Taimur. His other two children, actress Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim are from his former marriage to Amrita Singh.
