9 Famous Characters from ‘Ramayan’ Who are No More Among Us

Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’, recently made a comeback on Doordarshan amid coronavirus lockdown. The series went on to become a cult classic. Even after more than 30 years, the show is enjoying the same popularity as it had enjoyed before.

But there are some actors from the show who are no more in the world to see this success. Read on to know about them.

Shyam Sundar Kalani – Sugriv/Bali

Actor Shyam Sundar Kalani, who rose to fame after playing the roles of Bali and Sugriv in Ramayan was reportedly suffering from cancer and breathed his last on April 6, 2020.

Mukesh Raval – Vibhishan

Mukesh played the role of Vibhishan in Ramayan. Apart from that, he also worked in Hindi and Gujarati cinema too. Reportedly, he was suffering from depression after the death of his young son. On November 15, 2016 the actor was found dead on a railway track.

Dara Singh – Hanuman

Dara Singh became popular for his role as Hanuman in Ramayan. It is said that in Umargaon, where Ramayan was shot, pictures of Dara Singh were placed in temples as Hanuman. Apart from TV, Dara Singh worked in a number of movies too. Unfortunately, on July 12, 2012 the actor bid farewell to the world.

Urmila Bhatt – Sunaina

Popular Bollywood actress, Urmila Bhatt who played the role of Sunaina in Ramayan, breathed her last on February 22, 1997.

Nalin Dave – Kumbh karan

Actor Nalin Dave played the role of Kumbh karan in the Ramayan. He started his career as a theater actor and later went on to work in Gujarati cinema. He breathed his last in 1990 at an age of 50. ‘Aapki Saza’ released in 1989 was the last film of his career.

Vijay Arora – Meghnath Indrajeet

Though Vijay Arora started off his career as a Bollywood actor but he found success on the small screen with his role of Meghnath in Ramayan. He died of stomach cancer on February 2, 2007.

Lalita Pawar – Manthara

Pawar’s performance as Manthara in Ramayana is still etched in people’s memory. She was the quintessential evil mother-in-law of Hindi films, who was loathed in every household and often called the mother of all vamps in Bollywood. She died in February 24, 1998 after battling mouth cancer.

Jayshree Gadkar – Kaushalya

Jayshree Gadkar played the role of Ram’s mother, Kaushalya in Ramayan. She was a noted Marathi and Hindi movie actress and a star of Marathi cinema from the 1950s up to the 1980s. The actress died on August 29, 2008 following a brief illness.

Moolraj Rajda – Janak

Actor Moolraj Rajda is well known for portraying the role of Sita’s father, Janak in Ramayan. Apart from Ramayan, he also worked in Vikram Aur Betaal with Ramanand Sagar. The actor breathed his last on September 23, 2012.
