Manipur government on Wednesday appointed a nine-year-old girl Elangbam Valentina Devi as brand ambassador for the Chief Minister’s Green Manipur Mission who was in the news recently after she sobbed inconsolably when two trees she planted were cut down.
Elangbam Valentina Devi of Kakching district had planted two gulmohar trees about four years ago while she was studying in Class I.
Now studying in Class V at Amutombi Divine Life English School, she wept after seeing the trees being chopped off while cleaning the bank of a river in her locality.
The matter reached the authorities of the state government after the video clip of her crying went viral in the social media.
The state authorities including chief minister N Biren Singh, forest and environment minister Th Shyamkumar Singh and other civil society organisations and NGOs are working actively the environment were among others who responded to the video clip.
On Sunday, state forest department provided 20 saplings which were planted along the road covering about two km on her request.
Youth club in her locality has also decided to plant around 1000 saplings in and around the locality acknowledging her love for trees. Reports said that she was consoled by members of the local youth club with a promise to plant more saplings in the locality.
An order of the state government issued today appointed her as “Brand Ambassador” for Chief Minister’s Green Manipur Mission”.
The order stated that all official tree plantation activities taken up by the state are in recognition of her immense love and exemplary affection for trees and to generate mass awareness on conservation of environment for a period of one year from the date of issuing the order.
She will be involved in various government sponsored plantation programmes including ceremonial tree plantation, VIP plantations, World Environment Day and Van-Mahotsava, departmental sponsored plantations etc. Further, she will be part of all such advertisements/ campaigns which promote increase in green cover in Manipur.
The Green Manipur Mission was propelled a month ago by the state government to reestablish ensured forest areas in every town of the State.
A year ago, Manipur had recorded a colossal increment of 263 sq. Km in forest area making it the third-most noteworthy state in the whole nation to have seen an expansion in forest spread.
