Famous Bollywood Celebs Who Almost Went Bankrupt

All that glitters is not gold! Our entertainment industry is no different. There is a harsh reality that exists behind all the glitter of the glamour world.

While it is the general belief that being a celebrity who enjoys considerable fame, means you eat, breathe, roll around cash, the same might not be true at all times. People’s celebrity status often makes them seem almost ‘invincible’, but what we tend to forget most often is that at the end of the day, even our most favourite and top celebrity is human, and that means they are not above the diktats of fate.

The wheels of fortune can turn for anyone, no matter how successful and famous you are at any given time, and these 8 popular Bollywood celebrities are proof that when it comes to money, you can never be too confident.

1- AK Hangal

Remembered for his popular dialogue: ‘Itna sannatta kyu hain bhai’, the actor went bankrupt at the age of 95 and as a result could not even afford his medical expenditure. Following a media spotlight on his condition, many fellow actors decided to intervene and offered financial help.

2- Amitabh Bachchan

One of Bollywood’s all-time biggest stars, Amitabh Bachchan had suffered a major blow when his company ABCL was declared bankrupt in 2000 with Rs 90 crore as debt. He had to even put his bungalow, Prateeksha, for mortgage. Reportedly, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ became his only saving grace and there has been no looking back for him since then.

3- Govinda

Govinda too went through a tough time financially. He had days when he was cash-strapped and didn’t have a single penny in his pocket. His financial situation was so bad that even hiring taxis and rickshaws became hard for him. Govinda managed to clear all his debts after starting his filny career again in ‘Partner’.

4- Jackie Shroff

This once-successful actor had to face the brunt of failure when his career was not sailing smoothly. In 2008, he had to take a loan from Sajid Nadiawala, which he was unable to pay in subsequent years. As a result, Sajid even sought taking legal action to recover the due amount. However, Salman Khan’s intervention saved Jackie from further dismay and he eventually sold off his flats to pay off the loan.

5- Preity Zinta

Preity didn’t seem to have great luck donning the producer’s hat. Reportedly, after her production ‘Ishkq in Paris’ crashed at the box office, the film’s writer-director Abbas Tyrewala filed a case against Preity for non-payment of dues. Apparently, Preity had to put her apartment on rent to clear the dues, and along with a little help from good friend Salman Khan she got out of the soup.

6- Raj Kapoor

The showman of Bollywood went into debts after his movie ‘Mera Naam Joker’ couldn’t create magic on big screen.

7- Abhay Deol

Abhay Deol too paid a heavy price (literally) for turning producer. His home production ‘One By Two’ was a major failure at the box office and made the actor suffer a huge financial loss. Things apparently got so bad that he had to sell his homes to repay all the loans.

8- Shilpa Shetty

Beautiful Mrs. Kundra used media as a catalyst to share her financial status. She admitted that she was running short of money and would not be able to make a video for her IPL team of Rajasthan Royals, because she is “extremely poor”. In a report she also admitted “paisa bachane ki koshish kar rahe hai hum”.
