The Ministry of Railways has decided to implement a ban on single-use plastic materials in campus which includes the trains too. The step will be in effect from October 2, 2019 (Gandhi Jayanti).
The Railway Board has asked Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Development Corporation (IRCTC) to implement return of plastic drinking bottles. They are also ready to install 1.853 plastic bottle crushing machines at 360 major stations in the first phase.

General Managers of Zonal Railways and Production Units were instructed to encourage all railways vendors to avoid the use of plastic carry bags. Railway employees were also advised to curb use of plastic products. rather to use reasonable reusable bags to reduce plastic footprint.
Indian Railways was identified as a ‘waste generator’ and had to take appropriate steps to follow Plastic Waste Management rules, a Railway Board officer said. Accordingly, steps should be taken to minimise the generation of plastic waste and for its eco-friendly disposal.
Abiding the rules , single-use plastics shall not be less than 50 microns, except where the thickness of such plastic sheets reduce the function of the product.
