Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers are not having a good time when it comes to handling the economic slowdown — both in public perception as well as in policy.
Railways and commerce minister Piyush Goyal, during an event, asked people criticising the government’s way of handling the economic slowdown to refrain from doing too much calculation and added that mathematics never helped Einstein discover gravity. Piyush Goyal was speaking at a Board of Trade meeting when he made that gaffe.
Yes, we know you are confused too.
When asked to respond on how the projected GDP growth rates will achieve India’s $5 trillion economy dream, Goyal said, “Don’t get into the calculations on the television that say for $5 Trillion Economy, the country will have to grow at 12%, today it is at 6%. Don’t get into these maths. Maths never helped Einstein discover Gravity.”
Einstein didn’t discover gravity. Sir Isaac Newton did.
Twitterati took note of the gaffe and set to correct him, following which Newton and Einstein became two of the top trending topics of the day.
After the video in which Piyush Goyal made the Einstein comment went viral, the railways minister issued a clarification.

1. Einstein discovered Gravity , not Newton.
2. Maths is useless.
3. Maths restricts innovation.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s clarification on his recent comments: The comment that I made had a certain context. Unfortunately some friends have sought to remove the context, pickup one line and create a very mischievous narrative. https://t.co/34nn1x3IlS pic.twitter.com/iK7UyU8Q12— ANI (@ANI) September 12, 2019
His gaffe comes days after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that millennials are one of the reasons behind the crisis in the auto sector as they prefer Ola and Uber after which she was mercilessly trolled on social media.
