In a very distressing incident, an elephant was hit by a speeding train in West Bengal’s Dooars on Friday (September 27) morning. A video of the incident has gone viral on the internet.
The incident reportedly took place at 8:30 am when the SGUJ-DBB (Siliguri-Dhubri) Intercity Express, which runs between Banarhat and Nagrakata, hit the elephant, which was crossing the tracks at that fateful moment.
IFS Parveen Kaswan tweeted the heartbreaking video. The video has gone viral on social media and shows the helpless animal critically wounded and struggling to get out of the tracks and people helplessly watching the heartbreaking situation.
Actors like Randeep Hooda and Sonu Sood also tweeted about it telling about the need for attention to such incidents.
IFS Parveen Kaswan kept twitter updated about the how abouts of the elephant.
The elephant however couldn’t bear the injuries and died.
Unfortunately, this is not the only incident in the region as the train tracks go right through the Dooars and there are numerous elephant corridors which many have been killed or injured due to this.
The accidents involving elephants had increased after conversion of the tracks from meter gauge to broad gauge. Building animal passage overbridges and underpasses in forests, as is done in other countries, is the easy answer. But an answer that India in its misguided compulsions to focus only on human rights and development, is not willing to even consider!
