It’s raining biopics in Bollywood. We have seen plenty of them – Sanju, Neerja, Dangal, MS Dhoni and Mary Kom among others – in the past couple of years, but the trend isn’t going away anytime soon. The fact that these movies are doing great at the box office is perhaps motivating filmmakers to make more. Also, between fiction and non-fiction, it is easier to choose the middle way — Biopics — isn’t it?
Here are some much-anticipated biopics of Bollywood that have managed to create headlines with its unique-cast and unmissable storyline.
When director Meghna Gulzar came across the extremely rampant issue of acid attacks, she roped in actress Deepika Padukone to feature in her on-screen take on the subject. Deepika will take on the character of Malti who is based on real-life acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal. Backed by Fox Star Studios, it also marks Deepika’s foray into film production. The film will feature Vikrant Massey in the cast as well and is set to release on January 10, 2020.
2- Gunjan Saxena
One of the unsung heroes of the nation, Gunjan Saxena was India’s first woman pilot of Kargil, who helped evacuate soldiers during the Kargil War in 1999. Janhvi Kapoor will be seen playing her role in the movie, which is jointly produced by Dharma Productions and Fox Star Studious. The movie is slated to release on March 13, 2020.
Based on the historical and incredible cricket world cup win in 1983, the movie stars Ranveer Singh in the role of Kapil Dev. Deepika, his real-life wife will play the role of his wife in the movie as well. Being directed by Kabir Khan, the movie is slated to release on April 10, 2020.
4- Shakuntala Devi
“Shakuntala Devi – Human Computer”, the biopic on the math genius is set to hit the screens on May 8 with actor Vidya Balan portraying the role of Shakuntala Devi. Shakuntala Devi, the mathematical wizard, was known for her ability to make incredibly swift calculations. Shakuntala’s genius was first discovered at the age of 5, when she solved a math problem for 18-year-old students.
The late Dr. J. Jayalalitha was a legendary politician and film actress who also served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Her life story is set to hit the big screen with Kangana Ranaut filling in her shoes. The trilingual biographical film is directed by A. L. Vijay and features Arvind Swami in the role of M. G. Ramachandran. The film will simultaneously be released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi on June 26, 2020.
6- Sardar Udham Singh
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, this film is based on the life freedom fighter Udham Singh who will be played by Vicky Kaushal. The revolutionary freedom fighter retaliated after the brutal 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar by meticulously assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab. Singh was subsequently tried and hanged to death on July 31, 1940. Kaushal and Sircar’s first collaboration is set to release in cinemas on October 2, 2020.
The fearless king Prithviraj Chauhan is a notable icon in Indian history. The legendary Rajput ruled over Ajmer and Delhi in the 12th century. Taking on his role in a brand new biopic is iconic actor Akshay Kumar with Manushi Chhillar playing his wife Sanyukta also known as Sanyogita. The film is directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and will also feature Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood in the cast. Produced by Yash Raj Films, it is set to release on Diwali i.e. November 14, 2020.
Directed by Amit Sharma of Badhaai Hofame, in Maidaan, Ajay Devgn is set to play the role of Syed Abdul Rahim who is known as the architect of modern Indian football. As the coach of the Indian football team, he led them to win a Gold at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta and reach the semi-finals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The film also marks the debut of National Award winner Keerthy Suresh in Bollywood as she plays the coach’s wife. Also starring Gajraj Rao, the film will hit the screens on November 27, 2020.
A biopic based on the life story of ace Badminton player Saina Nehwal is also in the works. Manav Kaul has joined the cast as Nehwal’s coach Pullela Gopichand. Directed by Amole Gupte and starring Parineeti Chopra in and as Saina, the release date of the film is yet to be confirmed.
This power-packed lineup may still be in the works but we can’t be more excited to watch the real-life stories play out on the big screen.
