People say that the best revenge is living well, but to be honest, I think the best revenge is running into your college crush years after he said you were too fat to date and then turning him down for a date when he asks you out after he’s realized you’ve lost a ton of weight (what can I say? I’m a petty, petty person).
I didn’t make that scenario up though — this is exactly what happened to one Indianapolis woman. After being turned down for a date by her college crush, Rachael Heffner decided see if she could win his heart by losing weight.
Heffner told that her weight problems started at a young age, after her mother died in 2004. “I was a little chubby when I was a kid, but after my mum became really sick and passed away I gained a lot of weight. Since I was so young when she died, I didn’t learn about nutrition from her and I was too set in my ways to listen to my dad’s nutrition advice,” she said.
Soon, she was eating nothing but chips and sugary treats, and downing drinking four bottles of soda per day. By the time she got to college, she had a BMI of more than 50 and weighed 285 pounds. But it wasn’t until her college crush told her that he didn’t want to date her because she was so heavy that she started getting serious about getting fit and losing weight.
She said, “My initial motivation was to prove people wrong. In college I was rejected by a boy and I wanted to show him that he’d made a mistake. I liked him and he didn’t like me, he made it known it was because of the way that I looked and that he wasn’t attracted to me because I was heavier.”
Heffner, now 25, began lifting weights with her roommate, cut out junk food, stopped eating out, and replaced her sodas with water. Soon enough she lost 140 pounds — and realized she didn’t want to date her former crush after all.
Heffner says that after running into him a few times since her weight loss, he’s asked her out, but she’s “him know that we’re just friends now and not romantic.”
“I also told him that he was the reason I started losing weight, which really shocked him and he apologized for what he said when we were younger,” she said. “But I’m glad he rejected me, I actually thanked him for it, as he was the reason I was able to get to the size I am today and there’s no point holding grudges.”
Unfortunately, with her amazing weight loss came a significant amount of saggy skin around her mid-section.
She said, “My next major trial will get getting my loose and excess skin removed. I’ve been trying to tone up for a while, but it’s not worked, and it’s hard being young with excess skin. I can deal with stretch marks, but the loose skin haunts me and reminds me of the girl I used to be, all I want is finally be able to be comfortable in my own skin.”
Along with working three jobs and selling some of her old belongings on the side, Heffner is trying to raise $15,000 for excess skin removal surgery to complete her transformation.
I think it’s safe to say Khloe Kardashian would be proud of Heffner’s “revenge body.” But in all seriousness, good for Heffner for getting healthy and becoming more comfortable with her body — that really is the best revenge.
