Mohabbatein was a big hit in the 2000s and had a special place in everyone’s heart. Helmed by Aditya Chopra, the film featured Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Jugal Hansraj, Kim Sharma, Jimmy Shergill, Preeti Jhangiani in leading roles.
The movie took the bar way higher, setting some unrealistic expectations from love and life. It had most love-struck desi kids manifesting freedom and a love that knows no bounds. “Mar bhi jaaye, pyar wale… mit bhi jaaye, yaar wala… zinda rehti hai unki Mohabbatein…” that was the vibe.
As the film completed 20 years, let us take a look at what the cast is up to in 2020. Are you ready to feel old?
1- Jugal Hansraj
The blue-eyed boy from the movie is now 48 but he is still charming as ever! The actor married investment banker Jasmine Dhillon in 2014 and is settled in the US. He was last seen in the 2016 film Kahaani2 and is still actively working on movie scripts.
On the 20th anniversary of Mohabbatein, Jugal was asked what his favourite scene from the film was. He said, “I can’t pinpoint one, but people like my scene where I tell a poem to Kim Sharma.”
2- Kim Sharma
Kim played the role of Sanjana, Jugal Hansraj’s best friend and love interest. Her dialogue from the movie – “Koi pyar kare toh tumse kare, tum jaise ho waise kare … koi tumko badal ke pyar kare, toh woh pyar nahi woh sauda kare … aur saheba, pyar mein sauda nahi hota … right?” is still a hit.
Now, Kim reportedly runs her own brand strategizing company and seasonally works in South Indian movies.
3- Jimmy Shergill
Jimmy is undoubtedly one of the most underrated actors in B-Town! The actor has been a part of many projects and undeniably enjoys a niche but prevalent fanbase. He delivered an impressionable and mature performance in Mohabbatein. Some of his popular films include Tanu Weds Manu, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, My Name Is Khan, Judgemental Hai Kya, and Special 26.
4- Preeti Jhangiani
Preeti played the beautiful damsel in distress who valued relationships above all else but never did get her dues in love. The actress is now married to Parvin Dabas and is a mother to two kids. In an interview with TOI, Preeti spoke about her journey in Bollywood post the success of Mohabbatein.
She said, “After ‘Mohabbatein’, I signed about 15-20 films. All of them didn’t take off. I really don’t know why. The system wasn’t as professional as it is today. There were no managers, no agencies.”
When asked to pick her favourite scene from Mohabbatein, she said, “The scene wherein I tell Jimmy that ‘station pe khadi ladki ko toh dekh liya lekin uske maathe ka sindoor nahin dekha, uske haathon ke kangan nahin dekhe’. As for the song, I will pick ‘pairon mein bandhan hai’; it marked my entry.”
5- Uday Chopra
His character in Mohabbatein is fondly remembered for it’s mischievous, brave-hearted spirit. He was last seen on the big screen in Dhoom 3 (2013). He’s calling the shots at YRF, where he works along with his brother Aditya Chopra.
Also a screenwriter and producer, Uday is currently settled in the US and lives a luxurious yet low-key life, away from the eye of the media.
6- Shamita Shetty
Shamita earned the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the year for her portrayal of Ishika in Mohabbatein. In 2009, the actress also participated in the reality show Bigg Boss. Currently, she runs a successful interior designing business.
Speaking about Mohabbatein, the beauty shared with Hindustan Times, “It is a very surreal feeling. I was so raw at that time, but it was a beautiful experience. I loved the end product on the big screen. I made some beautiful friendships, and am still in touch with most of them. Today, when I meet people, they have only good things to say. I was someone who always loved watching Yash Chopra’s films, and it was a dream debut. I couldn’t ask for anything better. I grew up watching his films, and I had to work hard to become my character. I had to put on weight, it is not as if I auditioned and immediately got the part.”
